Scottish Cup tie abandoned

The Scottish Cup tie first leg at Glasgow was abandoned after five heats at just after four o'clock on Sunday afternoon. Edinburgh were at full strength while Glasgow were without Scott Courtney and Emiliano Sanchez. Richard Juul guessted in place of Sanchez while Robert McNeil stepped in for Courtney.

The match was nearly half an hour late starting because the first aider team had not arrived. Had there been a prompt start at 3.00pm it is likely that the match would have reached heat 12 before the downpour called a halt to proceedings.

Monarchs won the toss and took the inside gates in heat 1. Robert Eriksson made the gate and had no difficulty in seeing off Les Collins while Blair Scott struggled at the back. eat 2 was also tied with Rusty Harrison coming from the back to win the heat ahead of Christian Henry and Will Beveridge.

Heat 3 proved to be a classic with Carr gating and Grieves passing on the outside. Carr kept coming back at Grieves but the Glasgow rider always seemed to have the edge. The racing was incredibly hard given the wet conditions. This looked to be heading for a Glasgow heat advantage with Richard Juul clear ahead of Ross Brady. Things changed on the last bend when Carr produced a superb turn to edge ahead of Grieves. Then Brady caught Juul napping and passed him just before the line.

Heat 4 looked to be heading for another tie as Mark Courtney was leading Kevin Little and Will Beveridge with Robert McNeil tailed off. Then Kevin stopped with engine problems and Will ran into him. The race was stopped and awarded with Little excluded to level the scores. Monarchs edged back ahead in heat 5 when Robert Eriksson beat Grieves and Blair Scott took third ahead of Juul.

There followed an interval at the request of the riders to see if the rain was going to stop. If anything it got worse. The riders then asked referee Gus McLeod to call things off and this was agreed.

The match may be restaged next Sunday depending on other commitments. Should the Speedway Control Board order a re-run of the Glasgow/Sheffield match this would take priority. Also should the Glasgow/Swindon match needs to be restaged this is likely to go next week.
