Results

Rider of the year: Nominated were Ross Brady, Peter Carr, and James Grieves. The voting was very close between the three of them but Ross Brady just edged the decision based on his high rating from supporters of other teams.

Winner: Ross Brady

Heat leader of the year: Nominated were Peter Carr and James Grieves. Peter won this quite comfortably.

Winner: Peter Carr

Second string/reserve of the year: Nominated were Ross Brady and Blair Scott. While Ross received far more support, since he has recieved the main award this one goes to Blair.

Winner: Blair Scott

Young rider of the year: Nominated were Ross Brady, David McAllan, and Blair Scott. Ross again won the vote but the award goes to David McAllan.

Winner: David McAllan

Guest of the year: Nominations came in for Les Collins (predicatably), Paul Pickering, Mick Powell, and Frank Smart. Mick Powell's two maximums in two meetings ensured that he won the vote although special thanks are due to Paul Pickering for his show at Sheffield and to Frank Smart for a match winning display at Stoke.

Winner: Mick Powell

Reserve replacement of the year: Many riders have been used to fill in for the injured David McAllan and later for Brian Turner. Nominations came in for James Birkinshaw, Gary Phelps, Jon Swales, and Phil Ambrose. Jon Swales just shaded the result.

Winner: Jon Swales

Most exciting rider of the year: Nominations came in for Ross Brady, Peter Carr, Joe Sceen, and James Grieves. Peter again edged the result.

Winner: Peter Carr

Best visitor to Armadale: There were nominations for Carl Stonehewer, Les Collins, and Joe Screen. The vote went overwhelmingly to Stonehewer.

Winner: Carl Stonehewer

Performance of the year: James Grieves picked up nominations for his maximum at Newcastle in the Fours Qualifiers, his magnificent show in the Pairs Finals at Newport and in the League Match at Arena Essex.

Winner: James Grieves in the Pairs Final at Newport

Match performance of the year: Nominations came in for the cup win at Newcastle, the comeback to beat Newport in the cup and the defensive show at Sheffield in the cup semi-final. The casting vote goes to the Newport match at Armadale.

Winner: Edinburgh 57 Newport 33

Ride of the year: The overwhelming choice was Blair Scott's ride against Frank Smart at Armadale in which he pulled off such a dramatic late pass. This was again in the cup match.

Winner: Blair Scott in heat 8 of the cup match against Newport at Armadale

Heat of the year: There was only one real candidate for this award, the final of the Scottish Open in which Peter Carr came from third to pass both Carl Stonehewer and David Walsh. A nomination was also recieved for heat 15 in the Scottish Cup at Ashfield in which Les Collins passed James Grieves on the line.

Winner: Final of the Scottish Open: 1. Peter Carr, 2. Carl Stonehewer, 3. David Walsh

Special awards: Worst mechanics goes to Team Elkins, worst sportsman to Louis Carr, worst tractor driver to Bertie Barr. Finally the 'brass neck' award goes to Sheffield co-promoter Neil Machin for his laughable claim that Sheffield had qualified for the semi-final of the Premier National Trophy.
