Edinburgh Monarchs 65: Trelawny Tigers 25

Premier League

Lothian Arena, Armadale

Friday 25th May 2001

Monarchs had an easy win against a weak Trelawny Tigers side at Armadale reeling from a 63-26 defeat at Sheffield on Thursday. Peter Carr never likes to be outdone by Sheffield and will be pleased that Monarchs went one better with a 65-25 win.

The writing was on the wall after Monarchs rattled up three straight 5-1 maximums. This was followed up with two 4-2 heat advantages on either side of another 5-1 as Monarchs built up a 20-point lead after six heats. The remainder of the match went much the same apart from the odd flurry from Brett Woodifield and Pavel Ondrasik.

Trelawny were without Chris Harris on his way to the Under-21 qualifier in Germany. The guest billed was Seemond Stephens but he was not there and rider replacement was used. Reserve Wayne Barrett was also absent and Armadale second halfer James Denholm was drafted. Edinburgh were missing Christian Henry also in the Under-21 qualifier and David McAllan was brought in.

The track appeared grippy on an overcast evening with very light drizzle appearing from time to time.

As ever gate position B was in used with Edinburgh off 2 and 4 for the first heat.

Heat 1: Robert Eriksson, Blair Scott, Brett Woodifield [58.1]

Robert Eriksson made the gate and was away as Blair Scott produced a great cutback after missing the start to join him up front for a maximum.

(5-1) (5-1)

Heat 2: David McAllan, Derek Sneddon, Gary Phelps, James Denholm [58.5]

David McAllan edged ahead of Gary Phelps off the second bend to win in an impressive time. Derek Sneddon chased Gary Phelps hard and was rewarded when the visiting reserve wobbled through the fourth bend and Sneddon slipped past.

(5-1) (10-2)

Heat 3: Dalle Andersson, Peter Carr, Graeme Gordon, Pavel Ondrasik [58.6]

Carr was first away with Dalle Andersson at the back. Andersson was undaunted and passed the two visitors to join Carr up front.

(5-1) (15-3)

Heat 4: Jan Andersen, Pavel Ondrasik, Derek Sneddon [58.3]

The heat had to be rerun after Gary Phelps hit the fourth bend fence. He had been lying third before Derek Sneddon swept past on the third bend. In the re-run with Phelps excluded, Jan Andersen won easily while rider replacement Ondrasik just took second after a passing duel with Derek Sneddon.

(4-2) (19-5)

Heat 5:  Peter Carr, Dalle Andersson, Stefan Mell, Brett Woodifield [58.9]

Dalle Andersson missed the start but was especially impressive in carving his way past Woodifield and Mell for another maximum with Carr.

(5-1) (24-6)

Heat 6: Robert Eriksson, Brett Woodifield, Blair Scott, James Denholm [58.2]

Blair Scott was penalized for tape touching but came back in on a 15m penalty. Eriksson gated ahead of rider replacement Brett Woodifield. Scott soon passed Denholm but could make no impression on Woodifield.

(4-2) (28-8)

Heat 7: Pavel Ondrasik, Jan Andersen, David McAllan, Graeme Gordon [59.6]

Ondrasik outgated Jan Andersen with McAllan ahead of Gordon. Jan Andersen finally got past Ondrasik on the last lap only for the Czech to return the compliment and just take a tight decision on the line.

(3-3) (31-11)

Heat 8: Brett Woodifield, Blair Scott, Derek Sneddon, Gary Phelps [59.4]

Brett Woodifield was beginning to find his old Armadale form and led Blair Scott all the way to win the heat.

(3-3) (34-14)

Heat 9: Peter Carr, Dalle Andersson, Gary Phelps, James Denholm [60.2]

Gary Phelps came in as rider replacement. Peter Carr and Dalle Andersson had no problems in taking their third maximum of the meeting.

(5-1) (39-15)

Heat 10: Robert Eriksson, Blair Scott, Graeme Gordon, Pavel Ondrasik [58.7]

Eriksson and Scott swept ahead from the tapes and were never going to be caught.

(5-1) (44-16)

Heat 11: Jan Andersen, Brett Woodifield, David McAllan, Stefan Mell [59.2]

Jan Andersen won without problems. Mell had gated third but spun on the second bend and got going once more. McAllan passed the German at this point and tried everything to get past Woodifield without quite managing it.

(4-2) (48-18)

Heat 12: Peter Carr, Graeme Gordon, Derek Sneddon, Pavel Ondrasik [59.6]

Graeme Gordon came in as a tactical substitute for Denholm. Carr was away from the start with Sneddon at the back. Sneddon passed Ondrasik and went after Gordon only to be pushed to the back. Sneddon then saw a gap between the two visitors and surged through. Gordon managed to get past Sneddon to take second.

(4-2) (52-20)

Heat 13:  Robert Eriksson, Jan Andersen, Graeme Gordon, Stefan Mell [58.3]

Graeme Gordon came in again, this time as rider replacement. Eriksson and Andersen took another 5-1 without problems.

(5-1) (57-21)

Heat 14: Brett Woodifield, Dalle Andersson, David McAllan, Gary Phelps [59.2]

Brett Woodifield replaced Gordon as a tactical substitute and took his second win after outgating Dalle Andersson with McAllan taking third place.

(3-3) (60-24)

Heat 15: Jan Andersen, Robert Eriksson, Brett Woodifield [58.7]

Edinburgh took gate position in the final heat. Andersen led all the way while Eriksson passed Woodifield on the third bend to complete the match with yet another maximum.

(5-1) (65-25)

Carr and Eriksson produced paid maximums without ever looking like being beaten. Jan Andersen dropped only one point, as did Dalle Andersson. Monarchs' new Swede again looked the part with some classy riding and great passing technique.

Blair Scott was only beaten by Brett Woodifield, once off a 15m penalty and looked more convincing on a new engine. David McAllan had a great return and scored well despite not making many starts. Derek Sneddon returned to form with some determined riding.

Brett Woodifield established himself as an Armadale specialist with his fourth double figure score in four visits to Armadale. He took a couple of rides to sort himself out but was very impressive from then on despite not being able beat any of the home heat leaders. Pavel Ondrasik had one good ride to defeat Andersen but faded as the match went on with a motor that sounded distinctly agricultural. Graeme Gordon was steady without ever looking like winning a heat. Gary Phelps looked quite quick but rather wobbly. Mell never came to terms with the track. James Denholm scored what Barrett was likely to get!

Man of the match: Robert Eriksson

Most exciting rider: Dalle Andersson
