Isle of Wight 45: Edinburgh Monarchs 45

Premier League

Smallbrook Stadium, Ryde

Tuesday 1st August 2000

Edinburgh produced a battling performance to take a draw at Smallbrook Stadium where they have always struggled in the past. Three previous visits have resulted in three big defeats.

The islanders suffered from the loss of reserve Tommy Palmer in his first heat. Since they were already operating rider replacement and had no number eight, this meant that they were unable to cover two heats. Monarchs took advantage of this to lead by four points going into the last three heats. The home big guns took a 5-1 to level in heat 13.

The match probably hinged on heat 14. Will Beveridge was brought in to join Ross Brady in the hope of regaining the lead against Richard Juul and the tiring reserve Glen Phillips but was excluded under two minutes. Since Christian Henry had been replaced, he could not come in and Monarchs had to go out with one rider. Ross Brady won the heat to set up a last heat decider with the scores level. Ray Morton, who had been dominant throughout apart from the opening heat when he had bike problems, duly won but Carr and Eriksson ensured a draw.

Edinburgh were at full strength with Robert Eriksson unexpectedly given last minute clearance to ride. It was assumed that Eriksson would have to ride for his club in Sweden but with the squad system used in the Elite League he was replaced in the Indianarna side by another rider. The Islanders operated rider replacement for the injured Danny Bird.

This was an all round team effort by the Monarchs with every rider contributing points. Peter Carr and Robert Eriksson led the way as ever with double figure scores but Ross Brady, Blair Scott and Kevin Little all contributed with heat victories. Edinburgh won seven heats out of fifteen.

Kevin Little and Ross Brady both did reasonably well. Monarchs only produced six non-scoring rides throughout including Beveridge's two-minute exclusion. There was one last place each for Henry, Beveridge, and Little (in heat 15) plus two for Blair Scott before he changed his engine.

Ray Morton was the pick of the home team dropping only one point. Adam Shields did well before running last in heat 15. Scott Swain was patchy while Richard Juul was consistent. Glen Phillips started well before fading as he tired. Rider replacement for Danny Bird produced five points from the three rides covered.
