Farewell to Heathersfield
Four Team Tournament
Sunday 24th October 1999
The final official meeting at Heathersfield took place in front of one of the biggest crowds ever. There was a strong field including James Grieves, Les Collins, and Mick Powell.
The match was close throughout and there was a lot of good racing. There was almost a full turnout of riders. Steven Jones was replaced by Jamie Swales in the Midland while a bizarre form of rider replacement was used for David Meldrum for the Borders.
The Easterners had the red helmets, the Westerners were in blue, the Borderers were in white, and the Midlanders in yellow and black.
Heat 1: Mick Powell, Aiden Collins, Jon Swales [54.4]
David McAllan was attempting to get in touch with Mick Powell when he spun around on the third bend. He was excluded after the race was stopped. Powell won the rerun from Aiden Collins and Jon Swales.
Derek Sneddon was two minuted and James Denholm came in. Beveridge gated but Les Collins swept past majestically.
(0-2-1-3) (0-5-2-5)
Robert McNeil ran straight into the centre green and retired. Kevin Little won while Blair Scott held off Paul Gould.
(2-0-3-1) (2-5-5-6)
Derek Sneddon of the Easterners teams filled in as rider replacement for the Borderers. Grieves won easily but Sneddon secured a good second place.
(3-1-2-0) (5-6-7-6)
Will Beveridge gated and Kevin Little was unable to come back.
(1-3-2-0) (6-9-9-6)
James Grieves was in as rider replacement for the Borders side. He led from Mick Powell who spun 180 degrees and was hit by Derek Sneddon. Powell was
excluded and Grieves won the rerun.
(1-X-3-2) (7-9-12-8)
Les Collins beat Blair Scott to the first turn and won without difficulty.
(2-0-1-3) (9-9-13-11)
Heat 8: James Grieves, Aidan Collins, Robert McNeil [56.0]
Rob Grant was making James Grieves work hard when he fell on the third bend. He restarted but later retired as Grieves won from Aiden Collins.
(3-1-0-2) (12-10-13-13)
Mick Powell came in for Meldrum and was unable to get past David McAllan as Les Collins won once more.

Mick Powell won from Blair Scott and Rob Grant.
(2-3-1-0) (17-13-18-18)
Will Beveridge gated but James Grieves first drew level and eventually passed.
(3-2-0-1) (20-15-18-19)
Jon Swales led from Derek Sneddon with McNeil pressing. Sneddon made a slight error on the last lap allowing McNeil through. Sneddon tried to come back but McNeil drove in front of him near to the finish line.

David McAllan recorded his first win beating Paul Gould and Rob Grant.

(2-1-0-3) (28-21-22-25)

James Grieves looked unstoppable until he met Les Collins in the last heat. David McAllan did very well after falling in his first ride. Blair Scot was steady. Derek Sneddon showed some signs of progress.
Will Beveridge, riding a bike borrowed from Steven McAllister had a good meeting and dropped points only to Collins and Grieves. Scott Courtney looked rather subdued.
Les Collins was nominated as man of the match after a flawless 12 point maximum. He was supported well by Aiden and Paul Gould.
Man of the match: Les Collins.
Most exciting rider: Les Collins.
Next meeting: There is no next meeting, at Heathersfield at least!
