Sponsors Come Forward to Secure Eriksson Deal

It appears that the deal to bring Robert Eriksson back to Armadale has now been secured.

While Monarchs were around £500 short to meet Eriksson's wages, the appeal that went out quickly brought forward a sponsor and the only obstacle to the deal would appear to have been removed.

Alex Harkess defended the decision to sign Eriksson in the Edinburgh Evening News:

"When Robert last rode for us in 1997 he had the highest average round our track, above that of Peter Carr and our then Captain Kenny McKinna. Las year, when on loan to Newcastle, he boasted a higher away average than any of the Edinburgh riders."

"The fact that Robert is also our own asset makes him a very attractive proposition. And, as our fans won't need any reminding, Robert led Newcastle to two victories at Armadale last year, so the place holds no fears for him."

John Campbell commented:

Robert actually did us a favour in 1997, when he rode for quite modest money because he knew we were struggling after a bed year financially at Shawfield.

As well as the initial £500 sponsorship, Monarchs are still on the lookout for sponsors to hep cover Eriksson's weekly air fares to Sweden. Alex Harkess added:

"Over a season, the cost of his air travel would be around £3,000 so it would be nice if we could find a major company to back us."

There is one possible problem, that will affect all teams with team members riding in Sweden. The Isle of Wight run on a Tuesday. This is the same day as most Swedish Elite League matches are held. This will require careful planning to ensure that Monarchs visit Smallbrook on a night when Indianerna are not in action.

"Before we approached Robert we were aware of the maximum committments he will have next year. Swedish League matches take place every Tuesday. Fortunately the only Tuesday club in the Premier League is the Isle of Wight, and if Robert was required to fly home we would try an rearrange our Premier League game."

"However, I understand the Swedish Authorities may operate a rider pool system next year. So if Robert does join us, he may not be required to in them all."
