"Don't compare me with Kenny McKinna"

Monarchs new captain, Kevin Little, outlined set out his objectives in an interview with David Kinvig in the Edinburgh Pink on Saturday. His insisted that, despite the success of his predecessor, he would do the job his way.

"I was a bit surprised to be asked to be honest but I'll approach the role in a normal fashion and I'm sure I'll enjoy it. I don't have any ideas as such except to get the lads together and have a bit of crack and we'll see what develops after that."

"One of my tasks will be to help the younger riders but I've always looked after the kids anyway. My first job will be to toss the coin and choose gate positions."

"Some may think that Little will be blighted by McKinna but he doesn't believe in looking back."

"Kenny had his way and did a good job for the team and hopefully I can manage something similar. I was asked to captain the sidefor this season which I'm happy to do. Kenny did his job in the past, it's time to move forward."

Kenny McKinna will still be a fixture in the Armadale pits every Friday.

"Kenny is not the sort of person to look over anyones shoulder. And hopefully he'll have a word with me to keep me right and I'll be grateful fot that. I believe I've got a good team so there shouldn't be any hassles."

"A important quality of a captain is to gain respect of your team-mates and to ensure there is a good spirit within the camp to keep things going. That's what I'll be looking to achieve."

One of the few criticisms levelled aginst McKinna was that he spent a lot of time attending to others which occasionally led to him neglecting his own preparation. Little agreed but maintained:

"If two or three guys are having mechanical problems then sometimes your own needs get overlooked. If all the bikes are fine then everything should be OK. Besides we have a lot of experience in the team so there will be plenty of eyes looking out for our teanagers David McAllan and Ross Brady if I don't pick them up."

I'm not the sort of guy who rants and raves but if the guys deserve a rollicking they'll get one, if they don't then they won't!."

Little doesn't want to predict how well Monarchs will fare under his leadership.

"We have loads of experience. But ask me again after we've got a couple of months under our belts."
