Reading Target Ylinen

Reading Racers appear to have targeted Monarchs asset and Finnish champion Vesa Ylinen to fill their troublesome third heat leader place.

Vesa first rode for Monarchs in the Second Division where he was brought in as an outright Number One but never quite lived up to that. He was a good heat leader in a reasonable standard league. Unlike many Finnish riders, Vesa had a reputation as a racer rather than a fast starter.

He sustained a injury in the final season of the Second Division and never returned to Powderhall. His final average for Division Two League and Knock-out Cup matches was 7.68. He averaged 8.29 at home and 7.11 away. This placed him just behind Kenny McKinna, Les Collins and Scott Lamb in the Monarchs' averages but ahead of Jan Andersen, Lawrence Hare and Kevin Little.

He was out of Monarchs plans for the inaugeral 'one big league' PL in 1995. he did make a surprise return to Shawfield with the Scottish Monarchs at reserve late in the 1996 season. He came in for Robban Johanesson as part of a cost cutting exercise. After a bright start, he again disappointed and never really came to terms with the Shawfield track and scored better away.

Many supporters wanted Monarchs to bring back Vesa to Armadale at second string for 1999. Speculation was quickly ended when Stewart McDonald was signed to fill that slot.
