Glasgow Tigers Move

Scottish Speedway recieved a huge boost with the decision by Glasgow City Planning Committee to grant planning permision to use Saracen Park for speedway.

This stadium is the home of Ashfield Juniors Football Team and is situated to the north of the city near to Springburn and Bishopbriggs.

The councillors overturned the recommendation of their planning officials and granted two years approval rather than the one year suggested. This echoes the stance taken by West Lothian Council in giving three years approval for Armadale as opposed to the recommended two years.

Clearly there is a lot of work to before the start of the season later this month although some preliminary work has been carried out.

Had the planning permission been refused this could have led to a near repetition of 1996 when Monarchs were the only senior speedway team north of Middlesbrough.

The new stadium is scheduled to be opened on Sunday 18th April 1999. The start may be delayed but the important thing is that Tigers are back and they are still in Glasgow and not in Berwick or Long Eaton.

It is hoped that this decision will clear the way for Tigers to open Monarchs' 1999 Armadale season with a challenge match on March 26th.
