Monarchs crush Glasgow

The depleted Monarchs team swept aside a Glasgow team augmented by prospective future signing Henning Bager without breaking sweat. The meeting was the first leg of a Scottish Masters Challenge and was run on the old 13-heat format.

Edinburgh tracked David Walsh in place of Peter Carr at number 5 and had Rory Schlein in at number 7 for Dalle Andersson. Glasgow included Henning Bager at number 2 in place of the outgoing Stuart Swales. The team as tracked was nearly two points above the 45-point limit but flexibility in the rules has generally been observed in this type of challenge fixture.

Edinburgh started strongly and soon built up a 14-point lead. Glasgow held the lead in check with the aid of tactical substitutions but could make no impression.

The track was in excellent condition with good grip and passing lines on the inside and the outside of all bends. David Walsh completed the fastest race of the year at 57.3 seconds in heat 5. Ben Shields had earlier managed to win heat 2 in 58.2 seconds.

There were several memorable moments. Rory Schlein passed a stunned James Grieves on the third bend of the last lap of heat 4. Then in heat 8 Christian Henry was third on the last lap when he launched a big sweep off the last bend to pass both James Grieves and Henning Bager for a superb win.

David Walsh top scored with a four ride paid maximum. Robert Eriksson scored 10 point and Jan Andersen 9 paid 10 both from four rides. Christian Henry picked up 4 points in three rides and a tape exclusion. Blair Scott scored 4 paid 5 from four. Rory Schlein took 5 paid 6 from four rides. Ben Shields scored 4 paid 5 from three rides and a tape exclusion.

Emiliano Sanchez top scored for Glasgow with 10 paid 11 from five rides. James Grieves took 7 paid 8 from five and Les Collins 6 points from five rides. Henning Bager scored 4 from four rides and Simon Cartwright collected 3 points from two rides. Derek Sneddon scored 1 from three rides while Aidan Collins failed to score from two rides.

Glasgow made some bewildering tactical changes, switching reserves over but then effectively restoring them to their programmed rides with reserve changes and tactical substitutions.

Match Report

There was due to be a second half individual event for the Scottish Masters. This included two semi-finals for the top scoring eight riders. Two from each semi-final were to go through to the final on a De'il Tak the Hindmost basis.

David Walsh, Ben Shields, Robert Eriksson and Les Collins qualified for the final. In the first run of the final Ben Shields fell at the back and was taken away in the ambulance. This caused the meeting to be adandoned.

The Junior Masters featuring William Lawson and Gary Beaton was also abandoned after two of the three scheduled heats. William Lawson had already established a winning lead with two race victories.
