Edinburgh edge out Comets

Edinburgh made another late comeback, this time to beat Workington. Monarchs were level or behind for most of the match but leveled with a 4-2 in heat 13 from Peter Carr and Phil Morris and went ahead for the first time in heat 14 with a 4-2 curtosy of Jan Andersen and Derek Sneddon. This left Peter Carr to clinch the win with a fifth straight win.

The meeting started with a very wet track that restricted passing and ensured that most heats were won from the gate. The Workington heat leaders plus Rusty Harrison were much quicker out of the gate. Workington riders won six of the first eight heats with Peter Carr the only home winner. Despite this Monarchs only trailed by two points thanks to picking up minor points. Jan Andersen secured his first win heat 9 but that was tied as was heat 10. It looked odds on a win for the visitors at this stage.

Monarchs levelled with a 4-2 in heat 11 but faced a daunting prospect in heat 12. Ben Shields and Derek Sneddon were down to meet Rusty Harrison and Mick Powell who had only dropped one point between them in six rides. Monarchs put in Christian Henry and this paid off when he blasted past Harrison on the back straight to split the visiting pair after Ben Shields had been excluded.

Monarchs levelled once more in heat 13 after a controversial exclusion of Peter Karlsson. Phil Morris clashed with Karlsson on the second bend and both went down. Referee Graham Reeve excluded the Swede to the disgust of Workington supporters. Carr beat Stonehewer comprehensively in the re-run. Monarchs went ahead in heat 14 with Jan Andersen holding off Rusty Harrison and Derek Sneddon taking third ahead of James Mann who fell at the back.

This set things up for a last heat decider. Jan Andersen was penalized for tape touching and came back in the 15 metre line. This cost Monarchs gate position with Stonehewer moving to gate one and Carr in gate two and Powell in three. There was no problem with Carr securing his third win over Stonehewer and an impressive full maximum.

Match report

This win takes Monarchs back to the top of the Northern Group of the Premier National Trophy with a one point lead over Sheffield. Edinburgh are still on maximum points but probably need to win at Berwick to stay there.
