Premier League team latest

A number of Premier League teams are taking shape for 2001. Once again it is the Northern tracks who are quickest off the blocks.

To date, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Workington, and Sheffield have completed their line-ups. Glasgow have a tentative line-up. Berwick alongside Swindon have one three-point reserve to fill in order to finalize their team. Hull have still a couple of places to fill. Stoke have been delayed by negotiations over the track lease but have now made a couple of signings.

Of the Southern tracks, apart from Swindon, most have some way to go. Reading, the Isle of Wight, Exeter, Arena Essex and Newport.

Newcastle's team is Bjarne Pedersen, Richard Juul, André Compton, Kevin Little, Jesper Olsen, Rob Grant, and Paul Macklin.

Workington have completed their team with the addition of Rusty Harrison and Barry Campbell. The team is Carl Stonehewer, Lee Smethills, Peter Karlsson, Barry Campbell, Mick Powell, Rusty Harrison, and James Mann.

Berwick have signed former Monarchs' rider David McAllan. They are currently waiting approval for their final three-point reserve to complete the team. The team is Michal Makovsky, Will Beveridge, Josef Franc, David Meldrum, Adrian Rymel, David McAllan, and one to be confirmed.

Glasgow have agreed terms with Les and Aidan Collins, Mark Courtney, James Grieves, and Stuart Swales. Their team could be: Les Collins, Emiliano Sanchez, Stuart Swales, Mark Courtney, James Grieves, Aidan Collins, and either Scott Courtney or another three-point rider.

Sheffield should line-up: Sean Wilson, Adam Allott, Simon Stead, Scott Smith, Robbie Kessler, Andrew Moore, and Lee Hodgeson.

Hull have five riders signed. There are suggestions that New South Wales rider Dean Wiseman could be recruited to fill their second string vacancy. That would leave 3.87 points available for their remaining reserve. The team could line-up: Paul Thorp, Dean Wiseman, David Walsh, Lee Dicken, Gary Stead, Jamie Smith, and one other.

Stoke have been slow off the mark but have so far signed Tony Atkin plus a major capture of Jan Staechmann. Many expect Paul Pickering, Mark Burrows, Wayne Broadhurst and Dean Felton to be contenders for the remaining team places.

Swindon are biding their time to find a three-point reserve to complete their team. This reads: Alan Mogridge, Martin Dixon, Claus Kristensen, Oliver Allen, Paul Fry, Mark Steel, plus one other.

Newport have added Australian Scott Smith, a Monarchs' target last year, to their team to join fellow heat leaders Glen Cunningham and Steve Masters. Chris Neath has also signed as has Krister Marsh. Chris Courage will come in at reserve, this will leave room for a five-point second string.

Exeter have missed out on Chris Harris but have secured Michael Coles to join Seemond Stephens, Mark Simmons, and reserve Jason Prynn. They have ten points in hand to replace Harris at second string and sign a reserve. Lawrence Hare is in the frame for a place.

Newcomers Trelawny Tigers, who are riding at the former St. Austell track have picked up Graeme Gordon and Chris Harris from Exeter and have also signed Gary Phelps. They are also expected to sign Russian Roman Povanzhny.

The Isle of Wight have secured Ray Morton, Danny Bird, and Glen Phillips. It is expected that Adam Shield will return and may be joined by a fellow Australian Dave Watt. The return of Scott Swain would leave three and a half points available for a remaining reserve signing.

Reading appear to be building around the core of last years' team with Armando Castagna, Phil Morris and Dave Mullett expected to return. Paul Clews is still waiting on news. Reading have been knocked back by Andrew Appleton and Scott Swain for their final heat leader berth. Justin Elkins and Per Wester could come into contention.

Arena Essex have made a surprise signing with Andy Galvin. Leigh Lanham is to return along with Troy Pratt and Colin White. Shaun Tacey is expected to become number one for Arena. Jan Pedersen does not fit into Arena's plans and is available for loan. Luke Clifton is on loan from King's Lynn at reserve.
