Six down and one to go!

Monarchs have now only one rider short of completing their team. A third heat leader to replace Newcatle bound Kevin Little is still required.

The race order will not be finalized until the team is complete. It would be logical if Robert Eriksson and Blair Scott continued at number one and number two respectively. Peter Carr might be best used at number five riding with Christian Henry and Derek Sneddon. That would leave Jan Andersen at number four to ride with the third heat leader.

Jan Andersen has the potential to average nine points as his record with Peterborough in 1998 proves. This will take a bit of pressure off the third heat leader if he is to partner Jan. This would also give Monarchs a good balance with all three pairings strong.

Monarchs have 7.75 points available to fill the vacant position. Given the 2.5% points reduction for UK riders that would mean anyone who averaged 7.95 or below in the Premier League last season would fit in. If an Elite League rider was selected the points available becomes 3.97 (or 3.87 if UK).

With new Australians reputedly coming in on seven points this year, that presents a possible (if risky) option. Apart from the Australians already established in the Elite League such as Travis McGowan and Kevin Doolan, Christian Henry appears competitive with any of the yooung Aussies. Since Christian is on a four-point average, it asking a lot for an untried rider to live up to seven and a half points. Last year Adam Shield did just that with the Isle of Wight although Rusty Harrison was on a mere four and a half points with Glasgow.

Monarchs have failed to sign André Compton and reputedly also went for David Walsh before he signed for Hull. There were also suggestions that the authorities blocked an audacious bid to bring in former Belle Vue Ace Chris Manchester.

Monarchs certainly have the basis of a competitive side. However Newcastle, Sheffield and Workington have also assembled very powerful squads. The final signing might help to determine if Monarchs can do what they narrowly failed to achieve last year and finally take the Premier League title.
