Monarchs out of Young Shield

Monarchs suffered a cruel elimination from the Young Shield after a late comeback resulted in the meeting tied after 30 heats of speedway. Peter Carr faced Martin Dixon in the runoff and seemed set for a big win until his engine blew up on the fourth bend leaving Dixon to compelete the formalities to take Swindon through to the semi-finals.

Up to that point the bad luck had evened itself out. Robert Eriksson's engine went up in a shower of sparks on the start line in heat 10. Robert was then forced to ride Blair Scott's bike in his last two rides. Paul Fry also suffered an engine failure when ahead in heat 13. Robbie Kessler was excluded in heat 11 when he fell with Kevin Little leading. Martin Dixon then won the re-run. Kessler suffered injuries and took no further part in the meeting.

While the match was nip-and-tuck throughout it was a rather dull meeting. The light drizzle that fell throughout made the track greasy and ensured that most heats were won out of the gate.

Swindon held Monarchs to 36-36 in the first 12 heats. The match did come to life in heat 13. Oliver Allen had replaced Robbie Kessler. Paul Fry was first away leading Robert Eriksson toiling on borrowed equipment with Allen ahead of Little. Little managed to pass Allen before the Swindon youngster got himself in a tangle and slipped way behind. Eriksson was trying to get on term with Fry when the Swindon captain stopped leaving the home riders half a lap ahead. This put Monarchs 4 points ahead with two heats to go.

Monarchs should have stretched the lead in heat 14 especially after Oliver Allen nearly fell and dropped out of contention again. Kevin Little in as rider replacement was beaten for the second time by Claus Kristensen with Christian Henry third. Monarchs now needed a heat 15 maximum to force a runoff. This was duly delivered by Carr and Eriksson ahead of Dixon and Fry. This set things up for the dramatic conclusion.

Peter Carr had a paid maximum. Robert Eriksson only dropped points with his engine failure. Kevin Little never looked like winning a heat apart from the aborted first attempt to run heat 11. He finished with five second places plus a bonus point for a rather flattering double figure score.

Blair Scott had a great meeting dropping only one point after finishing last in heat one. Neither Christian Henry or Will Beveridge got going with Bevvy falling three times in four rides. Rider replacement for Ross Brady produced 5 points, a win for Scott, a second for Little and two last places for Christian Henry.

None f the Swindon heat leaders produced many points apart from one win for Paul Fry. This was compensated by good displays from their second strings and reserves with five wins beween them.
