Monarchs finally acheived a win at Ashfield after failing narrowly in three previous attempts this year. A 45-45 draw in the Spring Trophy was followed by 45-44 and 47-46 defeats in the Premier National Trophy and Premier League matches. Monarchs were without Ross Brady who was in hospital for tests after falling on Friday and rider replacement operated. Derek Sneddon stood in at number 7 for Glasgow.
The unlikely hero of the day for Monarchs was Kevin Little who top-scored with 13 paid 14 from seven rides. This total included a crucial heat 13 win and a paid win behind Carr in the inevitable last heat decider.
The match was notable for a controversial heat 5 in which Robert Eriksson was excluded. The heat was shaping up nicely with James Grieves just holding off Eriksson. Then Eriksson tried to go around the outside on the fourth bend when Grieves nearly put him in the fence. Eriksson was clearly unhappy and came back at Grieves cutting inside him on the next lap. They clashed on the first bend and Grieves went down. The referee excluded Eriksson but Grieves then completely lost the plot and went berserk earning himself a £250 fine from referee Graham Reeve. The exclusion put Glasgow ahead for the first time. This was extended to six points in heat 6. This allowed Edinburgh to use Blair Scott and Kevin Little as tactical substitutes.
Monarchs took succesive heat advantages in heats 9, 10, and 11 to level the scores. Glasgow moved ahead with a 5-1 in heat 12 but Monarchs reduced the arrears to 2 points after a heat 13 advantage. This put the pressure on the Monarchs reserves who had to go out in heat 14 against Emiliano Sanchez and the in-form Rusty Harrison. Will Beveridge gated and held on to keep Monarchs in the match. Kevin Little and Peter Carr came out in heat 15 to take the required 5-1 to win the match.
Once again the whole team contributed with only Blair Scott failing to take a heat win or a paid win. Monarchs' riders won nine of the fifteen heats with three from Carr, two each from Little, Eriksson, and Beveridge.
Monarchs won the Scottish Cup by 99 points to 81.
