Edinburgh lead in Scottish Cup

Edinburgh took a stranglehold on the Scottish Cup with a convincing 53-37 win over Glasgow at Armadale. Things were close after the first threee heats but Monarchs then pulled ahead with a couple of 5-1 heat advantages. That finished the match as a contest as Edinburgh pulled further ahead.

Glasgow only won four heats, two by James Grieves, one by Les Collins plus one from Rusty Harrison in the reserves race. Indeed Glasgow only took three heat advantages, in heats 2, 7, and 14. None of the Tigers' heat leaders got anywhere near Peter Carr or Robert Eriksson. Mark Courtney was looking very useful by the latter stages of the meeting.

The key point of the meeting came in heat 8 when Glasgow made a double tactical change with Mark Courtney in and also Les Collins as a Golden tactical substitute. This was intended to bring Glasgow back into the match but it backfired spectatularly as Blair Scott and Will Beveridge shot out of the gate. Not only was Mark Courtney having problems passing Will Beveridge but Les Collins was unable to pass Mark Courtney! Evenually Will went rather too wide on the second bend and Courtney nipped into second place. By then Blair was way ahead and Les had insufficient time to mount a challenge on Will.

Peter Carr recorded yet another full maximum while Robert Eriksson produced a paid maximum. Of the home riders Christian Henry had an off night after his great show at Sheffield the night before. Ross Brady started well but fell in his last two rides, both when challenging uo front. Will Beveridge was very solid and was paid for 8 point points from five rides.

Match Report The return leg will be held, weather permitting, on Sunday afternoon.
