Edinburgh went down in a dramatic last heat decider at Derwent Park, losing by 46 points to 44 to Workington.
Edinburgh went into the last heat trailing by two points and needing a 5-1 to win. For a lap or so it appeared that they would get the required result as Peter Carr and Robert Eriksson led. Carl Stonehewer managed to pass Eriksson and finally Mick Powell also got through to tie the heat and win the match for the Comets.
Peter Carr top scored for Monarchs with 16 from six rides. Robert Eriksson scored 11 paid 12 from six. Blair Scott produced 6 paid 8 and Kevin Little 6 points.
Christian Henry withdrew after two rides taking a point in heat 2 before pulling out after his second ride. This was down to the wrist injury suffered at Armadale on Friday. Ross Brady scored 2 paid 3 points and Will Beveridge 2 points.
Workington were at full strength apart from James Mann substituting for the injured Barry Campbell.

This result means that Monarchs at least secured the bonus point from their Cumbrian rivals and go to the top of the table for the first time this season. With Workington and Newport in action on Sunday, Edinburgh will need a result to stay there.
