Edinburgh dug deep to pull off a hard fought victory over Workington by 48 points to 39. It was a pulsating match that where the advantage swung from one side to another. However the racing was not of the highest order with both sides struggling to come to terms with the track. There were a very large number of falls and exclusions. In heat 7, for example, both Monarchs fell to gift a 5-1 to Workington. Then in heat 8 both Comets fell to give the advantage back to Edinburgh.
Carl Stonehewer and Lee Smethills pulled off a shock 5-1 over Peter Carr and Blair Scott in heat 12 to pull Monarchs' lead back to a single point. Things looked grim for Edinburgh going into heat 13 with that slim single point margin. Carl Stonehewer was looking unstoppable and Peter Carr was toiling. A Comets win looked on the cards especially with Brent Werner out in heat 14.
However, in heat 13, Peter Carr put his previous problems to one side and blasted inside Stonehewer while Eriksson swept around his outside to secure a 5-1. In heat 14, Ross Brady beat Brent Werner and Blair Scott took third to wrap up the points.
The winning margin was probably as big as Edinburgh could have expected. The Edinburgh lead never exceeded five points until after heat 14. This prevented Workington using any tactical substitutes.
Current Premier League results and tables are as follows:
Monarchs have now gone into the top half of the table and are within three points of league leaders Hull. This gap could be closed if Edinburgh can get a result at Berwick on Saturday.
