Monarchs Green Sheet Averages

Edinburgh Monarchs have now completed three home and three away matches in the Premier National Trophy. This qualifies for the issue of new Green Sheet Averages. These will become effective one week after the home match against Glasgow.

Ross Brady will retain his 1999 Green Sheet Average for the moment as he only has started four qualifying matches, two at home and two away. He will not get a new Green Sheet Average until he has completed three home and three away matches. This will be in for the June averages which have a cut off date of May 15th, provided that he has completed the required six matches bu then. Monarchs have home and away matches against Newcastle prior to that date. The new averages will become effective on 1st June.

These will await confirmation from the official figures to be issued by the British Speedway Promoters Association. The results to date are as follows, according to our calculations:

Brian Turner is due to be replaced. As things stand the new averages will give 4.37 points available to fill that position. The problem is that there are not a lot of riders available in that points band. David McAllan is currently awaiting the go ahead to return could come into the reckoning.

One option might be to wait until Ross Brady has obtained a new Green Sheet Average. The rules are unclear if this will be issued once the six matches have been completed or if he will have to wait until the the June averages are issued for the whole of team.

Ross's current average is very low at 3.67 as he has been riding while clearly unfit. If Brady's average and those of the other Edinburgh riders are not increased significantly, then Monarchs might have in excess of seven points available to replace Brian Turner. The problem will remain to find someone who is available and affordable.

The issue of Green Sheet Averages will entail a further change in the riding order. Ross Brady will step up to heat leader with Kevin Little moving to second string. This may only last two or three weeks until the June averages are issued or Brady obtains his 2000 Green Sheet Average. Depending on the outcome of that and the average of the rider brought in to replace Turner, Brady could even find himself down at reserve.

The figures show Peter Carr, Robert Eriksson, and Christian Henry all increasing their starting averages. Blair Scott is marginally down on qualifying matches but if other matches are taken into account, he is showing an increase. Kevin Little is around a point and a half down. This is partially down to bike problems and also due to riding at number one and number five for the majority of matches. Ross Brady has showed a decrease that is due to his foot injury.

The encouraging aspect of the results are the away results for several riders. Peter Carr, Robert Eriksson, Christian Henry, and Blair Scott are all averaing almost as many points away from home as at home. Indeed the first three are averaging more away from home than their starting average. If Ross Brady cane recover his away form of last year, this should make Edinburgh a stronger side away from home than the 1999 team.
