Stonehewer fit for Friday

Carl Stonehewer, the first Premier League rider ever to reach the Grand Prix and the most popular visitor to Armadale, will definitely ride in Friday's vital Premier Trophy match at the West Lothian venue in spite of an injury scare and medical advice to rest.

A blood clot on the ribs has been diagnosed following a crash with Robbie Kessler at Sheffield, and he did miss the visit of the Czech tourists to his home track last weekend. Also as a precaution he didn't turn out for his Swedish club on Tuesday night.

But sensational Stoney, runner up to Peter Carr in last year's Scottish Open and third in the Grand Prix Challenge to qualify for this year's series, says "We have three fixtures in four days over the weekend which are vital to our Premier Trophy chances. I will be at Armadale on Friday."

Workington promoter Ian Thomas, reported:

"Carl had X-rays done on his back and ribs earlier this week and was given the all clear to ride. From our point of view, this is terrific news because we have a busy weekend and we need everyone to be fit."

That's good news for the fans who will anticipate some great racing when the little Mancunian comes up against home stars Peter Carr and Robert Eriksson who have made such a great start to the season.

It will also be great news for the Monarchs promotion as a visit by Stonehewer always adds to the attendance given Stoney's loyal band oof supporters who following him all around the couty and indeed all over Europe.

Mick Powell rejected suggestions that his stint spannering for Peter Carr had gained him any inside information. Mick added:

"I did try and pick up a few tips but Peter wouldn't tell me anything. Seriously, it will be a very difficult match for us. Monarchs are a very strong home side and Peter is almost unstoppable round Armadale."

Workington are now clear favourites to top the Northern section after a double win over Glasgow and pushing Sheffield close at Owlerton. Mick attributes this to hard work:

"We have made a flying start to the season. More importantly everyone has gelled together. It is vital if you want to stand a realistic chance of winning any silverware."

If Ross Brady does recover from his foot injury, Monarchs will be at full strength for the first time since the season opener. Given the strength in depth of the Workington side, Monarchs will do well to win on Friday. They will obvioisly be hoping for something more than that with the match bonus point in mind.

Children arriving early for the match on Friday will receive their tradtional easter egg curtosy of the club.
