There are 3.86 points available to fill the vacant spot. David McAllan remains the obvious candidate on an average of 3.83. However he could be ruled out for the start of the season following the operation on his injured knee ligament.
While there are not many riders of the approriate average, a couple of Edinburgh's 1999 riders come into that category. Brian Turner is on 3.69 while Jon Swales is on 3.56. Brian Turner is still recovering from the wrist injury sustained while riding for Monarchs last year. Edinburgh would have to deal with Glasgow over Turner. They may be reluctant to do so after the Grieves and Brady incidents. Jon Swales proved that he could score well at Armadale given decent equipment when he borrowed a James Grieves bike in the match against Glasgow. If he is unwilling to ride full time in the Premier Leaguue this year he may be prepared to fill-in for McAllan in the early part of the season.
Glasgow, Sheffield and Workington have filled both reserve slots while Berwick have a vacancy for 3.00 rider. It would appear that Edinburgh and Newcastle are the only places where Swales and Turner are able to ride in the north. Unless, of course, Hull make a late switch to the Premier League.
