Premier League Fours Northern Group Qualifier 4th Leg

Abandoned after Heat 8 due to Rain

Lothian Arena, Armadale

Wednesday, 17th July 1998.

Edinburgh made heavy weather of defending their big lead in the Northern Fours Qualifying round. After 6 heats, the Monarchs had collected only 6 points as compared with 14 for Glasgow and 13 for Newcastle. The pre-match 14 point lead over Newcastle was looking very shaky indeed until Kevin Little and Peter Carr came to the rescue with heat wins. At that point the weather completed the rescue act.

Edinburgh, Glasgow and Newcastle were at full strength but the Berwick line-up was somewhat makeshift with Martin Dixon joining Scott Lamb and René Madsen plus David McAllan and Wesley Waite at reserve.

The track was very wet following two heavy showers prior to the match. A further downpour at the half-way stage ended the proceedings for the night.

Heat 1: Mick Powell, Brent Werner, Kenny McKinna, René Madsen [58.3]

A fast start by Mick Powell enabled him to win the opening heat of the night.

(1-3-2-0)

Heat 2: Dalle Andersson, Scott Lamb, Marcus Andersson, Stuart Swales [59.1]

Dalle Andersson continued where he left off in the Cup Qualifier at Armadale with a fast start and another heat win for Glasgow.

(2-6-2-2)

Heat 3: Jesper Olsen, Kevin Little, Grant MacDonald, Martin Dixon [58.6]

Armadale specialist Jesper Olsen took this race from the in-form Kevin Little.

(4-7-5-2)

Heat 4: Nicki Pedersen, Dave Steen, Peter Carr [58.6]

Nicki Pedersen passed Dave Steen to maintain his Armadale form. Wesley Waite fell.

(5-9-8-2)

Heat 5: Dalle Andersson, Jesper Olsen, Kenny McKinna, David McAllan [58.8]

Andersson won his second heat holding off a determined effort by Jesper Olsen.

(6-12-10-2)

Heat 6: Nicki Pedersen, Mick Powell, Martin Dixon [58.6]

Marcus Andersson lost a chain and fell heavily on the first turn and was excluded. Nicki Pedersen gated and although Mick Powell was right on his back wheel there was no way past.

(6-14-13-3)

Heat 7: Kevin Little, Scott Lamb, Brent Werner, Dave Steen [59.1]

Kevin Little rode a cleaver first turn to lead and broke Monarchs duck.

(9-14-14-5)

Heat 8: Peter Carr, Grant MacDonald, René Madsen, Stuart Swales [58.8]

Peter Carr secured a very big win despite a rather ragged start.

(12-16-14-6)

Edinburgh struggled without a win in the first six heats until Kevin Little and Peter Carr weighed in just before the abandonment.

Glasgow made a great start with Dalle Andersson turning in another impressive Armadale performance in the wet.

Newcastle looked capable of giving Edinburgh a run for the Northern Fours. Pedersen and Olsen continued their recent Armadale form although Werner and Swales did not score as well as usual.

Berwick made little impact and only Scott Lamb looked capable of scoring.

Man of the match: Nikki Pedersen and Dalle Andersson

Restaging on this leg to be arranged.
