Premier League Fours Northern Group Qualifier

Shielfield Park, Berwick

Saturday, 16th May 1998.

Edinburgh totally dominated the Berwick leg of the Northern Group Fours Qualifiers against depleted opposition. It was a typical Berwick meeting with little passing yet sometimes exciting racing. The main emphasis was on the gate and time and time again a blue helmeted Monarch emerged ahead by the end of the second bend.

Berwick were without Jorg Pingel on duty in Germany and reserve René Madsen. David Meldrum came in at number 2 and David McAllan at reserve. Peter Scully was able to resume after missing the Cup match at Armadale. Edinburgh used Robert Larsen in place of Paul Gould at number 4 to join the heat leaders while Blair Scott was reserve. Glasgow were missing Dalle Andersson and promoted Will Beveridge with Grant MacDonald at reserve. Finally, Newcastle were without Jesper Olsen so James Birkinshaw came in with Malcolm Hogg at reserve.

The weather was dry but Berwick was shrouded in mist which certainly made spectating difficult at times.

Heat 1: Peter Carr, Will Beveridge, Brent Werner, Peter Scully [68.2]

Carr gated and won by an embarrassing margin with Beveridge surprisingly beating Werner and Scully.

(0-3-2-1)

Heat 2: Kenny McKinna, Nicki Pedersen, Craig Taylor, Sean Courtney [67.0]

Kenny McKinna won after a blistering race and knocked 0.3 seconds off Scott Lamb's track record.

(1-6-2-3)

Heat 3: Robert Larsen, David Meldrum, Stuart Swales, Grant MacDonald [69.0]

Mick Powell was excluded for tape touching and replaced by Grant MacDonald. Robert Larsen gated and made in three in a row for Edinburgh.

(3-9-2-4)

Heat 4: Scott Lamb, Dave Steen, Kevin Little, James Birkinshaw [67.9]

a tight first bend and Scott Lamb edged ahead of Steen and Little to bring Berwick into contention.

(6-10-4-4)

Heat 5: Kenny McKinna, Mick Powell, Peter Scully, James Birkinshaw [67.7]

McKinna again after beating Powell away.

(7-13-6-4)

Heat 6: Peter Carr, Dave Steen, Craig Taylor, Stuart Swales [67.8]

Dave Steen gated but Peter Carr managed to pass.

(8-16-8-4)

Heat 7: Nicki Pedersen, Kevin Little, Will Beveridge, David Meldrum [67.6]

Nicki Pedersen recorded Newcastle's first win staying ahead of Kevin Little and Will Beveridge.

(8-18-9-7)

Heat 8: Scott Lamb, Sean Courtney, Brent Werner, Robert Larsen [68.4]

Scott Lamb gated and withstood an outside line charge from Robert Larsen to win easily. Larsen looked good for second until he shed a chain within yards of the chequered flag and juddered home after being passed.

(11-18-11-8)

Heat 9: Nicki Pedersen, Dave Steen, Robert Larsen [67.2]

Peter Scully stopped on the second bend and retired. Nicki Pedersen won his second successive race over Steen with Larsen going very slow as the mist thickened.

(11-19-13-11)

Heat 10: Mick Powell, Kevin Little, Craig Taylor, Brent Werner [67.7]

Mick Powell achieved Glasgow's first victory from Kevin Little and Craig Taylor.

(12-21-16-11)

Heat 11: Peter Carr, David Meldrum, James Birkinshaw, Sean Courtney [68.7]

Peter Carr totally missed the start but was able to come through and win after passing first Sean Courtney and then after a couple of laps, David Meldrum. Sean Courtney slowed down and James Birkinshaw came through for a point.

(14-24-16-12)

Heat 12: Kenny McKinna, Scott Lamb, Stuart Swales, Will Beveridge [67.5]

Kenny McKinna prevailed in the showdown between two riders still on maximums.

(16-27-16-13)

Heat 13: Will Beveridge, Robert Larsen, James Birkinshaw [69.9]

Robert Larsen gated and stayed ahead until passed by Beveridge on the last lap. Craig Taylor retired with engine problems.

(16-29-19-14)

Heat 14: Peter Scully, Kevin Little, Sean Courtney, Stuart Swales [68.3]

Peter Scully on David Meldrum's bike finally made a start and beat Kevin Little.

(19-31-20-14)

Heat 15: Kenny McKinna, Brent Werner, David Meldrum, Dave Steen [68.0]

Kenny McKinna completed his maximum with another easy win. David Meldrum appeared to lose power allowing the disappointing Werner to take second place.

(20-34-20-16)

Heat 16: Mick Powell, Nicki Pedersen, Scott Lamb, Peter Carr [67.5]

Peter Carr missed the start once more and against Powell, Pedersen and Lamb there was no way back. Mick Powell had an impressive win over Nicki Pedersen.

Edinburgh managed eight wins, fours seconds, two thirds and two last places. The no scoring rides came when Larsen lost a chain when second and when Carr was unable to get back after missing the gate in the highly competitive Heat 16. McKinna and Carr were backed up well by Little and Larsen. The Dane's total of 6 is creditable given that he failed to score in the cup match at Shielfield two week earlier.

Glasgow were solid down the line with only Sean Courtney not scoring what might have been expected. Powell, Steen and Beveridge all looked the part. rant MacDonald won the two reserve races ahead of Blair Scott and David McAllan in both cases. Glasgow could have been even better placed ahead not Powell tpaed in a heat he was expected to win.

Berwick had Scott Lamb in good form. David Meldrum also did well after his recent difficulties. Peter Scully took some time to get into things. René Madsen was missed although I am unsure about Jorg Pingel since Meldrum scored quite well.

Newcastle certainly missed Jesper Olsen who picked up a maximum in the corresponding fixture last year. Nicki Pedersen was as impressive as ever. Brent Werner was a disaster with only one (gifted?) second place and two thirds to show for his evening. Swales and Birkinshaw battled away for little reward.

Man of the match: Kenny McKinna

Most exciting rider: Peter Carr

Next round: Newcastle Fours on Sunday 24th May 1998.
