Cricket introduced the one-day game to liven up the sport and made it more appealing. The biggest crowds Rugby Union pulls in , outside of internationals, is the 'Sevens'.

Football kept abreast of the times by allowing penalty shoot outs, Golf and Darts introduced 'sudden death', even Chess has livened up it's proceedings with half hour games.

The message from the fans seems to be "Give us excitement in short sharp bursts." I'm pushing for one-lap races.

Just think of it. No more losing count of what lap the guys are on. No more break downs - on average bikes breakdown on the third lap. No more 5-1 against dives to stop the race. No more would riders have to endure "He's just a gater" cat calls from the uninitiated - in one lap Speedway everybody would have to be a gater!

No more processional races. No more 5 & 3 lap races. No need to upgrade the track every couple of heats - They only do one lap now instead of four.

No more freezing October nights - 16 laps x 15 seconds = 4 minutes. Two minutes maximum in between each race. Hey, we could be in and out of the stadium inside half an hour and still have a good night's Speedway.

(By the way, the drawing of the Speedway rider was lifted from the Swindon site and a Monarch race jacket painted on it... he's been transferred. Actually the Swindon site is quite good, use our link to get there).

The sport would be cheaper too; riders cost would be diminished because now they ride one lap instead of four. Therefore it would be cheaper to get in and we could spend the extra money we save in the bar because the meeting would be over quicker and that would leave us more drinking time. I'm sure this is what clinches it for The Emmerdale Boys.

Of course there will always be someone ready to Poo Poo my idea. Well they laughed at Higginbottom (the inventor of the self-seal envelope). Let them laugh, I don't care.

Why has no one thought of one-lap races before?
